Before the GTA 6 Beta opened its doors to the public, there was a much smaller, much quieter testing phase: the GTA 6 Alpha. Run by Rockstar Games between November 2025 and February 2026, the Alpha was the first external hands-on testing of Grand Theft Auto VI. Here's what happened during that phase, what testers experienced, and how it shaped the Beta you can sign up for today.
What Was the GTA 6 Alpha?
The GTA 6 Alpha was a closed testing program limited to a few thousand hand-picked participants. Unlike the current Beta, which opens the full state of Leonida, the Alpha restricted testers to a subset of Vice City -- primarily Ocean Drive and Vice Beach. The focus was on validating core systems: the RAGE engine performance on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, networking infrastructure for multiplayer, and fundamental gameplay mechanics.
Five Phases of Alpha Testing
- Phase 1 -- Engine Stress Test (Nov 2025): Focused on rendering, frame rate stability, and SSD streaming across both consoles. Testers explored a limited map area to push the engine to its limits.
- Phase 2 -- Networking Validation (Dec 2025): Multiplayer sessions with up to 64 players tested dedicated server infrastructure, matchmaking, and latency across regions.
- Phase 3 -- Gameplay Loop (Jan 2026): Core missions, driving physics, combat, and the wanted system were evaluated in controlled scenarios.
- Phase 4 -- Content Integration (Jan 2026): Vehicles, interiors, NPC AI, and radio stations were added for broader gameplay testing.
- Phase 5 -- Beta Transition (Feb 2026): The Alpha build was upgraded to the Beta foundation, opening Leonida and scaling the tester pool from thousands to hundreds of thousands.
Alpha vs Beta Comparison
The Alpha was deliberately limited. Testers had access to roughly 15% of the final map, no prologue chapter, a 64-player multiplayer cap, and about 50 vehicles. The Beta expands all of that dramatically -- full Leonida access, 128-player sessions, 200+ vehicles, the exclusive prologue, and the complete Rockstar Beta Center app. Alpha testers who submitted quality bug reports received priority Beta access and exclusive cosmetic rewards.
NDA and Confidentiality
The Alpha operated under a strict non-disclosure agreement -- even stricter than the Beta's. No screenshots, no recordings, no public discussion of any kind. Violations resulted in immediate removal from the program and potential legal action. The NDA for Alpha content remains in effect even after the Beta launched.
