For the first time in a mainline GTA game, you're not playing as one person -- you're playing as two. Jason and Lucia are the dual protagonists of Grand Theft Auto VI, and Rockstar's built the entire narrative structure around their partnership. It's not just a story gimmick either -- it fundamentally changes how missions, free roam, and even multiplayer work.
Lucia
Lucia is the first female protagonist in the mainline GTA series, and Rockstar hasn't played it safe with her character. She's sharp, resourceful, and carries the kind of moral complexity that makes Rockstar protagonists interesting. Her backstory involves ties to organized crime in Leonida -- the fictional state that encompasses Vice City and its surrounding areas. In gameplay, Lucia excels at stealth approaches and social engineering, with unique dialogue options during missions that Jason doesn't have access to.
Jason
Jason is more of a traditional GTA protagonist on the surface -- but there's depth underneath. He's a drifter with a complicated past who gets pulled into Lucia's orbit. His gameplay strengths lean toward direct action: better accuracy under pressure, higher damage resistance, and access to heavy weapons earlier in the progression. Where Lucia talks her way through problems, Jason tends to shoot through them.
The Dual-Protagonist System
You can swap between Jason and Lucia freely during open-world exploration, similar to how GTA V handled its three protagonists. But Rockstar's refined the system significantly. Certain story missions lock you into one character based on narrative context, while others let you switch mid-mission -- sometimes mid-cutscene. The camera work during transitions is genuinely cinematic. They've also added co-op missions in the beta where both characters operate simultaneously, with AI controlling whichever one you're not playing as.
Character Customization
Both Jason and Lucia can be customized extensively -- clothing, accessories, hairstyles, tattoos. Each has their own wardrobe and style options that reflect their personality. Customization items are earned through story progression, multiplayer activities, and exploring the open world. The features overview covers the full character creation system in more detail.
The Voice Cast
Rockstar hasn't officially confirmed the complete voice cast as of April 2026. What we know is that the performances were captured using full performance motion capture -- not just voice recording -- at Rockstar's studios. The facial animations in the beta are a generational leap, which suggests the mocap work was extensive.
